Behind the Book

The Making of “WITCHES” — A Coloring Book by Ink & Omen

This book started with a simple idea: I wanted to create a complete series of illustrations, something cohesive and personal.
At the time, I was working on fantasy-themed artwork and contributing to a small online magazine. I enjoyed the freedom of fantasy as a genre — the way it lets you make things up, explore symbolism, and stretch reality a little. It gave me room to experiment, and ink felt like the right tool for that: direct, accessible, and honest.

But the deeper inspiration for this book came from another place entirely — museums.

I’ve always found something captivating in the galleries of Old Master paintings — rooms filled with dramatic scenes, mythological symbols, and moral fables. Much of that work was created for entertainment, and often reused the same themes: zodiac signs, saints, tarot cards, allegories of life and death.
It was never just decoration — it was a way to retell shared stories, again and again, through the lens of each new artist.

I wanted to do something similar.
So instead of saints or gods, I imagined twelve witches — each with their own familiar, a symbolic jewel, and a certain mood. Some feel ancient. Some are modern. One, for example, is drawn as a barista — someone you might pass by every day, unaware of the magic she holds behind the scenes.

That’s a theme throughout the book: that there’s often more depth behind what we see.
We move through the world quickly. But when we slow down, when we look closer, we notice small wonders — symbols, stories, little fragments of meaning. That’s where magic lives.

The book also includes a short story titled “What It Means to Be a Witch”, written by a friend and former collaborator whose work I had previously illustrated. This time, I invited her to write in response to my drawings. The result is a text that blurs the line between fiction and reflection — a quiet commentary on the witch as a symbol, and what she might mean today.
